14th Annual Culture Fest

Chattanooga State Community College’s Office of International Community Outreach will host Chattanooga’s 14th annual Culture Fest Sunday, Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the First Tennessee Pavilion. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the showcase of local international communities. Admission is free. Featured activities and entertainment will include live performances from local cultural groups, a Parade of Nations, a multicultural fashion show, a dance contest, and an exhibition of culturally-themed art. Additional opportunities to learn about other cultures will be presented at 20 display booths, where sample foods from various countries will be offered periodically throughout the day.

River Rocks becomes RoverRox

The Chattanooga River Rocks Festival will change format for 2013, becoming the RiverRox Adventure Sports Games. The focus of the 11 day event will be land- and water-based competitions designed to attract top athletes. Included in the events are the Swim the Suck 10 Mile, Triple Crown Bouldering Comp, the Chattanooga Head Race and the Rock Creek Stump Jump.

Volunteer for Tennessee River Rescue

Saturday, October 5

It’s not too soon to think about volunteering to help with Chattanooga’s signature outdoor stewardship event, the TN River Rescue, happening Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals, church groups, scouting troops and neighborhood associations can all register to help clean up a portion of the TN River watershed. This year’s goal is to have 25 work zones, encompassing Bradley, Hamilton and Marion counties. Free symphony orchestra concert

Sunday, October 6

Southern Adventist University’s Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Laurie Redmer Minner, will perform its first concert of the new school year on October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists. Highlighted pieces include Mozart’s “Overture to “The Magic Flute,” Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 1,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7 in A major.” The event is free and open to the public. Archivists visit Chattanooga in search of Civil War memorabilia

Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10

Representatives from the Tennessee State Library and Archives and the Tennessee State Museum will be in Chattanooga Wednesday, October 9 and Thursday, October 10 to record and digitize Civil War memorabilia owned by local residents for an exhibit titled “Looking Back: The Civil War in Tennessee.” The event will be held in conjunction with the Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Signature Event, “Occupation and Liberation.” Archivists will be at the Chattanooga Convention Center on October 9 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and October 10 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. During that time, they invite area residents to bring in original photographs, documents, and other artifacts related to the Civil War. The archivists will scan or take digital photographs of the materials, some of which will be featured in the exhibit, located online at www.tncivilwar150.org. Party like am ‘80s rock star

Chattanooga-area residents will soon have a chance to party like a rock star as they fight to stop lung disease. On Saturday, November 2, party-goers will enjoy an evening of food, auction items, and rocking 80’s-style entertainment with Rubik’s Groove. Dress is casual, but guests are encouraged to come dressed as an ‘80s rock star to ramp up the fun. The Quest for a Cure Research Dinner will benefit the American Lung Association in Tennessee’s lung disease research and educational programs. It all happens in the ballroom at the Chattanoogan Hotel, located at 1201 S. Broad Street. The festivities will kick off with cocktails at a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. A gourmet dinner will follow. Rounding out the evening will be a Rock Star acknowledgement program, a live auction, and the Rubik’s Groove Band. Awards will be presented for best costumes. Chattanooga Theater Center 2013-2014 schedule

The Chattanooga Theatre Centre will mark the group’s 90th anniversary with a 2013-2014 season of favorites selected from the community theatre’s unbroken 90-year string of productions. The Secret Garden will play Sept. 6-22 in the Main Theatre; Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, a haunting comedy, will play Oct. 18-Nov. 3 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; A Christmas Story: The Musical is slated for Dec. 6-22 in the Main Theatre; and Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple will be Jan. 24-Feb. 16, 2014 on the Circle Stage. Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew will play Feb. 28-March 16, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie will run March 21-April 6, 2014 in the Main Theatre; Pump Boys and Dinettes, a musical with Chattanooga roots, will play April 11-May 4, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; Harper Lee’s drama To Kill A Mockingbird will play May 16-June 1 in the Main Theatre; Pippin will play June 6-July 5, 2014 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; and Les Miserables, inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, will run July 11-27, 2014 in the Main Theatre.
