Eight Hamilton County public school students who were selected as 2014 PEF Passport Scholars shared their summer learning experiences at the Passport Scholars Celebration Thursday, October 23 at PEF.
Each spring, the Public Education Foundation works with Hamilton County public schools to have sophomore girls apply to be PEF Passport Scholars. The selected girls each receive a scholarship to attend an enriching summer program at colleges around the country. They also receive professional college and career advising. Over the last 12 years, 95 percent of the girls selected as PEF Passport Scholars have gone on to college.
Eight young women from five HCDE high schools who are now juniors shared their
summer learning experiences at the celebration.
East Hamilton High student Chloe Jones attended the Blue Tree Camp at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where they studied fashion design.
HCDE Collegiate High at Chattanooga State student Olivia Miller attended the Robert E. Cook Honors College Summer Honors Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she took an advanced science and physics course.
Lookout Valley High student Van Nguyen attended the Jump Start Program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio to prepare for a career as a doctor in Xavier’s pre-medicine program.
Ooltewah High student Jakeiry Morales attended the University of Rochester Pre-College Program in New York, where she studied computer networking.
Red Bank High student Melody Ormond attended the Young Women’s Writing Workshop at Smith College in Northhampton, Mass.
Red Bank High student LeBreshia Pactor attended the Texas State University Summer Theatre Camp in San Marcos, Texas.
Red Bank High students Rocio Perez and Maria Ramirez attended the Explore-A-College Program at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. Rocio studied anatomy and physiology, and Maria studied environmental chemistry.
The Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, the Weldon. F. Osborne Foundation and Kitty & Hacker Caldwell support the PEF Passport Scholars program.
