CHI Memorial Convenient Care locations in Signal Mountain and LaFayette, Georgia will host drive-through flu vaccine clinics on Saturday, Oct. 28, 8 a.m.-noon. Most insurance companies will pay 100 percent of the cost. The vaccine is $25 for those who don’t have insurance.
No appointment is necessary. You must be fever free to receive the vaccine. Anyone who gets the flu shot will be asked to wait 15 minutes after receiving it to make sure there are no adverse reactions.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone older than six months get a flu vaccine each year. Once you receive the vaccine, it takes about two weeks for your body to develop antibodies and provide protection against the flu. Flu activity usually peaks between December and February, according to the CDC.
-- CHI Memorial Convenient Care – Signal Mountain will offer the flu vaccine to people age 16 and older. The practice is located at 238 Taft Highway.
-- CHI Memorial Convenient Care – LaFayette will offer the flu vaccine to people age 5 and older. The practice is located at 615 East Villanow St.
SouthWord Literary Feast
The Southern Lit Alliance will present the SouthWord Literary Feast Nov. 3-4, with Friday’s events taking place at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s University Center and Saturday’s events occurring at both Lindsay Street Hall and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.
The event will consist of readings, discussions and panels with published members of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. SouthWord’s keynote address will be delivered by Wendell Berry, an American novelist, poet, environmental activist, cultural critic and farmer. Berry has written many novels, short stories, poems and essays.
Other authors in attendance will include poet T.J. Jarrett, author of “Ain’t No Grave;” short story and novel writer Jill McCorkle, whose works include “The Cheer Leader” and “July 7th”; Lee Smith, author of the New York Times bestseller “The Last Girls”; Charles Frazier, author of the 1997 National Book Award for Fiction winner “Cold Mountain”; fiction writer and environmental activist Silas House, author of more than 100 published short stories and poems; and bestselling novelist, poet and short story writer Ron Rash.
In addition to the panel discussions and readings, the event will feature book signings, a luncheon on Friday recognizing new inductees into the Fellowship of Southern Writers and a BBQ luncheon Saturday featuring writers John Shelton Reed and Roy Blount Jr.

Grateful Gobbler Walk
Registration is open for the 18th annual Grateful Gobbler Walk. The 5K walk, run and stroll will take place Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 23, 8 a.m. The proceeds will benefit the Maclellan Shelter for Families. The cost to participate is $25 for walkers and runners 13 years and older and $10 for ages 12 and under. Teams and individuals can register, volunteer and donate at www.gratefulgobblerwalk.org.
