Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond and Piedmont International University President Dr. Charles Petitt this month signed a memorandum of understanding that creates a partnership between the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and the university that will allow HCSO employees to earn a college degree.

The new collaboration will grant sheriff’s office employees one year of academic credit toward Piedmont’s undergraduate degrees in criminal justice and business administration.

Employees who have already earned an undergraduate degree will receive credit toward an MBA or Master of Arts in Leadership.

In addition to receiving academic credit for prior professional experience and certifications, HCSO employees will also receive scholarships from Piedmont.

“This partnership will allow HCSO employees to further their education at a nationally renowned university and enhance their knowledge and skills,” Hammond says. “This will in turn benefit them in their career and personal lives.”

Piedmont’s Vice Chancellor Sandeep Gopalan says the collaboration will also benefit the community.

“It has the potential to minimize litigation expenses and settlements for civil rights violations and unlawful deaths, bring 21st century digital skills to the community and build trust.

“It will also enhance promotion opportunities for officers and improve their capabilities and confidence.”
