Legal Aid offers free CLE classes




To create awareness in the legal community of the needs in the Chattanooga area, Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host seven one-hour seminars covering a variety of topics on Monday, Oct. 23, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Edney Innovation Center on Market Street.

Attorneys who agree to participate in at least one legal aid clinic in the coming year or take one pro bono case will be invited to attend these seminars and earn up to seven hours of free continuing legal education (CLE) credits.

The program will take place in the meeting space on the fifth floor. To register online, visit www.laet.org, click on the “Events” link at the top of the page and then scroll down to “Free CLE for LAET Volunteer Attorneys.”

Schedule of events:

  • 8:30 a.m.: Registration and breakfast; Sponsored by Miller & Martin
  • 9 a.m.: Estate planning for low income clients, Lauren Sherrell (O’Shaughnessy & Carter)
  • 10 a.m.: Consumer and debt collections, Brian Frye (Legal Aid of East Tennessee)
  • 11 a.m.: Benefits, Emily Hooper (LAET)
  • Noon: Networking lunch, sponsored by Miller & Martin
  • 1 p.m.: Bankruptcy, Deborah Yeomans-Barton (LAET)
  • 2 p.m.: Family law, Kathy Rowell (private attorney), Nicole Benjamin (LAET)
  • 3 p.m.: Landlord and tenant law, Emily O’Donnell of the Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga and Benjamin Danford (LAET)
  • Faith and Justice Alliance and faith-based legal clinics, Nancy Cogar (private attorney) and Marcy Eason (Miller & Martin)
