The Chattanooga Fire Department is urging residents to use caution when charging phones, laptops, e-bikes and other devices powered by lithium-ion batteries as part of this year’s Fire Prevention Week.
Fire Prevention Week, observed Oct. 4-10, will focus on the theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” CFD is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to educate the public about reducing the risk of fires involving rechargeable batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are used in phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, scooters and other devices. The batteries store large amounts of energy in a small space and can overheat, catch fire or explode if damaged or improperly charged, according to CFD.
“The way you charge your lithium-ion battery devices can make a difference in helping prevent home fires,” Lt. Jumaane Lanier, CFD’s fire and life safety educator, says. “It comes down to using simple habits each time you plug in.”
Fire officials recommend using the cord and charger supplied with a device or one approved by its manufacturer. Devices should be charged on hard, flat surfaces such as tables or desks rather than beds, couches or beneath pillows, where heat can become trapped.
Users should stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, begins to swell or smoke, or produces an unusual odor, according to CFD. Devices should also be unplugged when fully charged rather than remaining connected to a charger longer than necessary.
CFD recommends charging larger devices such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside and away from exits. Their larger batteries store more energy and can produce fires that grow and spread quickly if a battery fails.
When traveling by air, passengers should keep devices visible while charging rather than placing them in overhead compartments, the CFD said. E-cigarettes and vapes should not be charged aboard an aircraft.
CFD will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a free event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the East Chattanooga Community Center, 2409 Dodson Ave. The event will be held in conjunction with the East Chattanooga Fall Festival and will include games, food and fire safety education.
