What was going on in Chattanooga in 1912?



Saturday, October 19

Today will tell the story for Chattanooga men who have been working hard to establish a half-million dollar endowment fund for the University of Chattanooga. Only $39,959 is still needed, and it is expected they will reach the goal. Those who have been working especially hard are John Stagmaier, Z.W. Wheland and Spencer McCallie.

Senator and Mrs. J.B. Frazier announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Annie Keith Frazier, to Robert Somerville of Greenville, Miss. The wedding will take place in November. Mr. Somerville is a prominent attorney of Greenville. Miss Frazier is a very popular young lady both in Washington, D.C. and Chattanooga.

Mr. and Mrs. Leopold Gerstle announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Lucille, to Earle Neil Wester. Both are popular members of Chattanooga society and have many friends who will be interested in their wedding.

One of the largest formal affairs of the season was Mrs. John A. Patten’s beautifully planned tea at her home in St. Elmo honoring Mrs. T.S. Henderson, wife of Bishop Henderson, the new resident Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Three hundred guests called between the hours of three and six.

Sunday, October 20

Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Lanier of Missionary Ridge announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Mary Katherine, to Gaither Leonard Jones of Beaumont, Texas. The wedding will take place in November. Miss Lanier is a popular member of the younger set. Mr. Jones is assistant treasurer of the Gulf Refining Company of Louisiana.

The following young ladies have been selected as sponsors of the Tennessee team next Saturday when Tennessee plays Sewanee here at Andrews Field: Misses Nelson Chambliss, Augusta Gardenhire, Louise Van Dyke, Gertrude Alexander and Evangeline McKinnon.

Monday, October 21

The big Democratic rally ex-Governor Benton McMillin was to attend as principal speaker at the Auditorium tonight will take place, but because of the serious illness of Gov. McMillin’s son, Brown McMillin, in Briston, Tenn., the speaker will be Gen. Harvey Hannah. The street parade will be abandoned. Many expressions of sympathy have been sent to the McMillin family in this time of their great anxiety.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Beck’s attractive new home in North Chattanooga is nearing completion.

Mr. and Mrs. S.P. Long will entertain with a house party at their log cabin on Walden’s Ridge this weekend. They will entertain Saturday with a foxhunt and barbecue.

Major John Willet, who has just passed his 91st year, is the guest of Dr. J. Wesley Smith and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith. He is a native Tennessean born in Roan County in 1821. He participated in the Gold Rush in California and fought in the Confederate Army in many of the principal battles here. He is a close friend of Robert Cravens of Lookout Mountain.

Tuesday, October 22

Perhaps there is no better-known man in Chattanooga than Dr. P.D. Sims, dean of Chattanooga physicians, who is celebrating his 64th birthday today. He was born in Jackson County, Tenn., the son of Martin and Mary Rathmell Sims. Dr. Sims moved to Chattanooga in 1856. He has a daughter, Miss Ella, and son, Thomas. A surprise party of about 100 friends called to celebrate his birthday.

Miss Kate McReynolds is visiting relatives in Chickamauga, Ga.

Miss Alice Huffaker will entertain with a Halloween party at her home in Park Place.

Wednesday, October 23

Miss Emma Post and Louis Orr were married Tuesday night at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.S. Post, in North Chattanooga. The Rev. Gardner of North Side Presbyterian Church officiated. After an informal reception, the young couple left for an Eastern trip.

Mrs. W.C. McCoy is leaving for Knoxville Thursday for a visit with relatives.

Mrs. S.A. Williams will entertain the Pi Bet Phi sorority this afternoon at a tea at her home on Bailey Avenue in honor of her guest, Miss Clara Josephine Suckon of Franklin, Ind.

Thursday, October 21

Miss Mayme Nixon is visiting Dr. and Mrs. Charles Daniel and Mrs. Robert Snyder on Peachtree Street in Atlanta.

An important epoch of the campaign for the Endowment Fund of the University of Chattanooga was reached today. Dr. Race and his associates are happy that plans can now be made for a great future for the University.

Friday, October 25

Today at 2:30 p.m., with appropriate ceremonies, the three Chattanooga Masonic Lodges will lay the cornerstone of the new half-million dollar Hamilton County Courthouse. The exercises are under the Masonic rituals with Rev. T.L. Bachman of Sweetwater, grand master of Tennessee, presiding. Judge H.H. Ingersoll of Knoxville will deliver the oration.
