Chattanooga Symphony & Opera presents ‘Miraculous Mandarin’

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will continue the 2019-20 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series with “Miraculous Mandarin” at the Tivoli Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m.

The CSO will be joined by acclaimed cellist Thomas Landschoot for Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major, a work known for showcasing the many facets of the cello.

“Thomas Landschoot is a very sensitive musician who will bring out the most intricate nuances in Haydn’s music,” says CSO music director Kayoko Dan. “I’m looking forward to working with him and sharing his talents with the Chattanooga audience.”

The performance will also include contemporary American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s “Three Latin American Dances” and Hungarian composer Bela Bartok’s “The Miraculous Mandarin Suite.”

“Bartok’s work is colorful, innovative and exciting,” Dan says. “Frank’s music is often influenced by Bartok’s works, and you might hear some similarities in motives and orchestration. Frank’s work is fun, exhilarating and skillfully crafted, and I know the audience will fall in love with her style of music.”

Audiences can also get a behind-the-scenes look at the musicians of the CSO preparing for the concert during an open rehearsal for Haydn’s cello concerto at the Tivoli Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 8 p.m. Tickets for the rehearsal are $8 and must be pre-purchased at chattanoogasymphony.org. Attendance will be limited to 40 guests.

Tickets for “Miraculous Mandarin” begin at $21 and can be purchased by calling 423 267-8583 or visiting chattanoogasymphony.org. Discounts are available for students and music educators.
