CCS to honor military at football game

Chattanooga Christian School (CCS) tonight will team up with the Honoring the Sacrifice Foundation to honor this nation’s military men and women at CCS’s final home football game of the season. CCS and Honoring the Sacrifice invite the Chattanooga community to attend CCS Military Appreciation Night and show gratitude to the men and women who have served this country. CCS will also welcome all military and their families. Active and retired military who are present will be honored during a halftime celebration with patriotic music performed by the CCS band. All military with ID will be admitted free of charge to the football game against Signal Mountain High School, which begins at 7 p.m.
Chickamauga Battlefield Bicycle Tour

Enjoy historical stories of the Civil War while bicycling through Chickamauga Battlefield on Sat., Oct. 18, at 9:30 a.m. Hosted by the Friends of Outdoor Chattanooga and the Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, this free event is available to adults and children ages 8 and older when accompanied by an adult. Celebrate Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail

Celebrate the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Shackleford Ridge Park in Signal Mountain. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Cumberland Trail, which supports the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail and Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park. The event will feature guided hikes, educational programming, heritage music, and food. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about plateau wildlife (including birds of prey, mammals, and snakes), medicinal plants, and cultural conservation. Donations will be accepted.
Street Smarts Cycling Class

Outdoor Chattanooga will teach its free Street Smarts Cycling Class at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 at its Coolidge Park facility. Participants will learn how to deal cars, pedestrians, busses, on ramps, intersections, turn lanes, and traffic lights while riding a bicycle. Visionary Parenting

First Things First and Silverdale Baptist Academy will present “Visionary Parenting” with author Rob Rienow on Tuesday, Oct. 21. This event will be held at Silverdale Baptist Academy, located at 7236 Bonny Oaks Drive, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The seminar is designed to encourage parents and equip them with the skills to pass along good moral character to their children. Mark Twain expert to speak

Southern Adventist University’s McKee Library will host a presentation by author Ben Tarnoff on Friday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. The lecture, “Mark Twain and the Bohemians of the Far Western Frontier,” is free and open to the public. Attendees will be entered into a drawing to win signed copies of the speaker’s books. Turnoff has also written for The New York Times and The San Francisco Chronicle. The lecture is part of the annual celebration by Southern’s Center for the Study of 19th Century America. Frightening A** Film Festival

Mise En Scenesters have announced the line-up for its fourth annual Frightening A** Film Festival, scheduled to take place Friday, Oct. 31 from 7:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Films will include: local shorts; “The Demon’s Rook”; “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 40th Anniversary,” with a pre-film intro by “Leatherface” director Jeff Burr; and “The Babadook.” Live music by White Reaper and Soocro, stand-up comedy by Evatt & Bloom, and a costume contest will round out the festivities. Spooky vampire cruise

Blood Assurance will host a Halloween cruise on the Tennessee River Friday, Oct. 31. The Southern Belle will depart from Renaissance Park on the North Shore at 9:30 p.m. loaded with Halloween treats and a cash bar. Activities will include a costume contest and dancing.
