AFLAC: a new CBA member benefit

Raising The Bar

Lynda Minks Hood

Founded in 1955, AFLAC is a Fortune 500 company and a leader in voluntary insurance policies that pay cash benefits directly to policyholders. Insuring more than 50 million people worldwide, AFLAC is the principal subsidiary of AFLAC Inc., an international holding company based in Columbus, Ga.

AFLAC has been recognized by Ethisphere Magazine as a World’s Most Ethical Company each year from 2007 to 2013 – the only insurance company in the world that can make that claim. Fortune named AFLAC as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America for the 15th year in 2013.

AFLAC policies that are available to association members include Accident, Cancer, Critical Care and Recovery, Dental and Life.

AFLAC cancer care

AFLAC is most known for its cancer care. Chances are you know someone who’s been affected, directly or indirectly, by cancer. You also know the toll it takes on them – physically, emotionally, and financially. With the Cancer Care Insurance Policy, the Plan pays a cash benefit upon initial diagnosis of a covered cancer, with a variety of other benefits payable throughout cancer treatment. You can use these cash benefits to help pay out-of-pocket medical expenses, your rent or mortgage, groceries, or utility bills – the choice is yours.

Other insurance policies through AFLAC

Accident – Nobody plans to be in an accident, but when it happens, medical bills can start adding up fast. AFLAC’s accident insurance plans help employees be prepared by providing benefits for many costs associated with accidental injury.

Critical care and recovery – On average, someone in the U.S. will suffer a heart attack every 34 seconds, and about every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke. Recovery is tough, but it’s tougher when the bills start to come in.

Dental insurance – It’s no secret that routine dental care leads to good health, which reduces the risk of medical conditions that are complicated by poor oral health. AFLAC Dental insurance offers a wide range of dental services with no network restrictions to keep your members smiling bright.

Life insurance – People know they should have it, but it’s a difficult conversation for individuals to have with their family and loved ones. If something happens, will their family have the funds to pay the bills? AFLAC Life insurance policies are designed to help families get through the tough times, and include Whole Iife Insurance, Term Life Insurance, and Juvenile Life Insurance (Term or Whole Life).

As an Employer Group Policy Holder, you are eligible for:

Short-term disability – For many employees, temporary loss of income has long-term financial consequences. AFLAC’s Short Term Disability policies provide benefits that allow employees to manage their bills, even during a temporary loss of income due to a disability.

Hospitalization coverage – Most major medical insurance is not designed to cover all hospitalization costs, and when a hospital stay is necessary, the immediate cost of care can be more than many people are prepared for. AFLAC’s Hospital insurance plans can help to cover those unforeseen costs.

AFLAC offers three levels of individual coverage:

Association – requires a minimum participation level of three members but does not require payroll deduction. Associations are considered as a nonpayroll account. Association participants will pay their monthly premium through direct bill/automatic bank draft.

Employer group – requires a minimum participation level of three employees and mandatory payroll deduction.

Individual Direct – requires no affiliation with an employer or any association.

Whether an individual initiates their policy with AFLAC through an employer, association, or directly – that individual owns that policy.

All policies are portable, guaranteed renewable, and rate stable. No policy can be cancelled or premiums increased due to the number or nature of claims submitted or due to a change in employment or association status.

Association rates are good but not as good as employer group rates. The least favorable rate is the individual direct.

By making AFLAC supplemental policies available to Chattanooga Bar Association members, you’ll have a more affordable means of protecting yourselves against financial losses due to a catastrophic illness or injury.

Here’s how it works:

All members of the Chattanooga Bar Association are eligible to participate. Each member of your organization may elect coverage with AFLAC at the Chattanooga Bar Association rate. However, your membership with the Chattanooga Bar Association does not exclude you from participating as an employer.

Let’s say three employees with ABCD LAW FIRM are interested in taking out a policy with AFLAC, and the partners are willing to payroll deduct the premiums on behalf of their employees – thus, this law firm qualifies for the employer group rate (which is a better rate). ABCD LAW FIRM has the option to sign up as an employer group since they meet the required minimum participation level of three employees and mandatory payroll deduction. As an employer group, employees will also have access to short-term disability and hospitalization coverage.

I am so excited to have AFLAC as a Member Benefit for the members of the Chattanooga Bar Association! For complete details, visit their website at www.aflac.com/aboutaflac/default.aspx.
