Former Vice President Richard M. Nixon made the major address at Memorial Auditorium in a Republican rally. It was estimated a crowd of 6,000 persons attended. Representative Bill Brock introduced Mr. Nixon.

The schedule for the final wholesale appreciation tour, sponsored by the Wholesale Development Committee of the Greater Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, has been announced by John B. Crimmins, Jr., chairman of the appreciation tours. The chartered bus will leave Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 8 a.m. for LaFayette, Summerville, Rome, and Calhoun. The party will have lunch at the Holiday Inn in Rome.

Sunday, Oct. 11

A new ordinance making it unlawful to leave parked cars unlocked will be recommended to the City Commission this week, Fire and Police Commissioner Turner said. He will recommend a 90-day trial ordinance in an effort to reduce thefts.

Attendance at Plum Nelly Clothesline Art Show Saturday and Sunday totaled 12,216, with over two-thirds of the visitors arriving on Sunday. About 300 art pieces displayed at the 18th annual art show were sold.

Monday, Oct. 12

The city-county controversy over support of the Chattanooga Public Library was resolved Monday. County Judge Frost announced the County Council has agreed to appropriate $10,000 to the library in exchange for a $10,000 allocation from the city that will be added to the budget at William Bork Memorial Hospital at Silverdale. The library has agreed to stop charging an annual fee to county residents living outside the city limits, and any such fee paid so far will be refunded.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

Weldon F. Osborne, president of Osborne Enterprises, broke ground for a $10-million, 330,000 square feet addition to Eastgate Shopping Center which, combined with its paved parking area of 40 acres, will be the largest shopping center ever undertaken in the Chattanooga area. Present were officials from Lovemans Inc., F.W. Woolworth, and J.C. Penney Co. whose companies will occupy space in the new center.

Wednesday, Oct. 14

A $2-million project to include a 150-room, high-rise motor hotel and two separate and independent automobile agencies will be proposed to the Chattanooga Housing Authority Thursday. Citizens Motor Co., Lawrence-Doster Motor Co., and a Charlotte, N.C., investment firm will make the presentation. The facility would be located on West Ninth Street, across from Zayre Department Store.

Alfred E. Smith, partner in the firm of Hardie & Caudle, has been named chairman of the Heart of the City Improvement Committee, Carter Parham, president of the Chamber of Commerce, announced.

Thursday, Oct. 15

David Scarborough, president of the Georgia league, was host to more than 150 Realtors and guests. Pat St. Charles, Jr., was elected president of the Chattanooga Realtors.

The Zayre Corp., a national chain of self-service department stores, opened Chattanooga’s newest department store and automotive service center in the Golden Gateway Shopping Center. The store, the first building to be erected in the urban renewal area, will be the largest in the Zayre chain.

Friday, Oct. 16

Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, Democratic nominee for vice president, will make a campaign talk Saturday at a rally at Lovell Field. Former Gov. Buford Ellington will introduce Senator Humphrey. The speaker’s platform will be set up near the airport terminal’s main entrance.
