HCSO completes operational transition of Silverdale

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office assumed full operational control and oversight of the Silverdale Detention Center Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.

In early 2020, CoreCivic, which had managed the complex for more than 35 years, announced it would withdraw from its contract effective Dec. 30.

In order to prepare for this transition, Sheriff Jim Hammond appointed a transition team composed of HCSO personnel from various divisions and technical disciplines to develop a plan to manage the changeover.

“This transition represents the end of an era,” Hammond says. “For several months, the transition team and our corrections division worked to ensure every possible piece of this monumental process was carefully planned and addressed.

“We’ve overcome many challenges during the transition, and we still have a lot of work to do, but I feel confident we’re prepared and have the right personnel in place to move forward.”

Hammond also decided to begin the process of closing the aging downtown jail and moving the remaining inmates to Silverdale.

Closing the downtown jail is part of the HCSO’s plan to consolidate its corrections operations and redirect its resources in a more efficient manner, Hammond says.

The booking and intake area in the downtown jail will remain in place until the HCSO can complete renovations and upgrades at Silverdale.
