Someone once said a picture is worth a thousand words. Now photographer Jake Sherrill is sweetening the deal even further by offering members of the Chattanooga Bar Association 20% off the photography session of their choice.
But first, a little about Sherrill. Here, he discusses what inspired him to take photographs for a living, the essential elements of a good photograph and the details of his perks package for the CBA.
Where did you grow up and go to school?
“I grew up in Ringgold Georgia and attended Heritage High School.”
Tell us about the first camera you remember owning. What kinds of pictures did you take?
“My first camera was a Nikon. My family bought it for me for Christmas. I didn’t take many pictures back then or start utilizing my creative side until high school, when I took three years of broadcasting and filmed and edited highlight reels and commercials for the school.”
How did you become interested in photography as a profession?
“I studied media technology in college but more on the video and broadcasting side. After college, my mother asked me to take my brother’s senior photos. Everyone loved them and I never looked back.”
Tell us about the cameras you use today.
“I’ve become a Sony guy. I use a Sony a6300 and a A7Riii.”
What makes for a good photograph of a professional?
“Some people like a clean backdrop, which is fine with me, but also not me. I like creative back drops – something with texture or a cityscape.”
What’s important to you when capturing life’s milestones, such as a wedding or proposal?
“Genuine emotions and special moments are essential. I strive to capture the true feelings and interactions between loved ones.”
Tell us about the perks that members of the Chattanooga Bar Association receive when they use you as their photographer.
“Members of the bar can get 20% off their choice of photography session, whether it’s family, maternity, seniors, headshots or portrait. And when you book any wedding package with me, the engagement shoot is free. Keep in mind this is a one-time offer.”
What other services do you offer?
“The best thing is to ask me what you’re looking for and we can go from there.”
Of the many photos you’ve taken, which one is your favorite?
“That’s a hard question to answer. I often look down at my camera and think, ‘I get to do this!’”
