Black History Concert
Sunday, February 2
The Center for Creative Arts on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church will present a Black History Concert entitled “A Musical Walk through History.” The concert will feature various styles of African-American music ranging from spirituals to Motown. Music for Mutts
Saturday, Feb. 8
On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. at Rhythm n Brews, six local bands covering a variety of music genres will be holding a benefit Noah’s Bark animal rescue and rehabilitation: Hillbilly Sins; Natural Habitz; Stoneline Ba Nd; Beyond Red; Subkonscious; and Strata-g. Noah’s Bark rehabilitates neglected and abused pit bulls.
Fifth Annual BOOST Summit
Thursday, Jan. 30
The Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce’s Enterprise/Gateway Council will host the fifth annual BOOST Summit from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Volkswagen Chattanooga’s Academy Conference Center, located at 7469 Volkswagen Drive. The event promotes business and industry success by bringing companies together with local experts to discuss topics related to growth and workforce development. The topic of this year’s summit is “BOOST Into the Future: Changing the Vision of Success.” The forum will feature a panel discussion exploring skills and qualities business leaders expect and the direction education must take to prepare students to become qualified members of the workforce. Hamilton County Superintendent Rick Smith will provide opening remarks, and Garry Mac of Hospice of Chattanooga will serve as the moderator. The event will feature panelists from the education and business sectors.
Father-Daughter Dance
Friday, Feb. 7
The Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department will host a Father-Daughter dance at the Chattanooga Convention Center on Friday, Feb. 7. Photos will be taken beginning at 6:30 p.m.; dancing will start at 7 p.m. and last until 10 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres and a dessert buffet will be served. There are two ways to purchase tickets: Call 842-6748 to purchase tickets using a credit card and receive your tickets via email, or go to Chester Frost Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to pay using cash, check, or a credit card. Broken Hearts Ball
Friday, February 14
The Broken Hearts Ball will attract couples, singles, and friends on Friday, February 14. Guests will enjoy drinks, hors d’oeuvres, music, and dancing at Stratton Hall and participate in contests for worst break up lines and best forever stories. A photo booth will be available. Scenic City Half Marathon
Saturday, Feb. 22
Helping Chattanooga’s homeless animals is as easy as running or walking in the Scenic City Half Marathon, 5K, and Charity Challenge. Eight charities, including McKamey Animal Center, is competing in the Charity Challenge. A portion of each participant’s entry fee will be donated to the charity of his or her choice. The event will take place at Finley Stadium Saturday, Feb. 22 beginning at 8 a.m. Register at www.sceniccityhalfmarathon.com.
United States Navy Band free concert
Wednesday, Feb. 26
The United States Navy Band is scheduled to perform a free concert at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, Feb. 26 beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are free, but must be picked up at the box office or by calling 423-642-TIXS.
Dash for Down Syndrome
Saturday, March 22
A race held to raise awareness of Down syndrome is scheduled for Saturday, March 22 at Tennessee Riverpark. Packet pickup will take place Friday, March 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Noodles, located at 405 Market Street. Registration for the 5K race and the one-mile family fun run will begin the following morning at 7:30 a.m. at Shelter 4. The 5K race will start at 9 a.m.; the fun run will begin at 9:15 a.m. Participants with Down syndrome may compete for free.
Small Business Awards Luncheon

The Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce will host its 2014 Small Business Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, March 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Chattanooga Theater Center 2014 schedule
The Chattanooga Theatre Centre will mark the group’s 90th anniversary with a season of favorites selected from the community theatre’s unbroken 90-year string of productions. Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” will run through Feb. 16 on the Circle Stage. Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” will play Feb. 28-March 16 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” will run March 21-April 6 in the Main Theatre; “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” a musical with Chattanooga roots, will play April 11-May 4 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” will run May 16-June 1 in the Main Theatre; “Pippin” will play June 6-July 5 in the Mildred M. Montague Circle Theatre; and “Les Miserables,” inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, will run July 11-27 in the Main Theatre.
Mountain biking mentors for kids needed
The Southeast Youth Corps Trips for Kids program needs skilled mountain bikers to mentor kids on training rides on the Lookout Mountain trails. Trips for Kids this spring is partnering with the Lookout Mountain Land Conservancy to educate Howard School students in conservation and mountain bike skills. Successful graduates of the program earn their own mountain bike, helmet, and bike light. Rides are scheduled for Feb. 6 and 20, March 6 and 20, and April 10 and 24.
