What was happening in Chattanooga in 1916?



Saturday, Jan. 29, 1916

Miss Dorothy Hill of Hillsdale, Ga., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. McLearen, and was the honoree of a dance given by her hosts.

Famous Sewanee athlete “Chigger” Brown has been secured by Prof. Baylor and Alex Guerry for Baylor School. He will handle all teams and gymnasium work. Brown was a member of the championship team of 1909 with Aubrey Lanier, Sike Williams, and Ed Finlay.

Sunday, Jan. 30

Many groups have been organized to meet in homes and roll bandages for the wounded soldiers in Belgium and France. Mrs. Willard Steele has a group on Missionary Ridge; Miss Rosalind Ewing has a group in town; and Mrs. J.E. Smartt and Mrs. T.H. McClure have groups on Lookout Mountain. Other groups are being organized.

Monday, Jan. 31

D.M. Key left on a business trip to St. Louis, Chicago, and New York.

Tuesday, Feb. 1

Just three weeks to the hour and day since the drowning of Alvin Ware and John Taliaferro, Ware’s body was found by a fisherman at the mouth of Mouse Creek below Charleston. The body of Taliaferro has not been found. Services for Ware will be held at L.J. Sharp Funeral Home with Rev. Loaring Clark officiating.

Mrs. Louis Karr and Mrs. F.K. Rosamond will be hostesses at a Valentine Tea Feb. 14 in the Hogshead Apartments Sun Parlor.

Wednesday, Feb. 2

The national YWCA will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a jubilee starting today. The local governing board is composed of Mesdames J.P. Smartt, C.V. Brown, R.H. Williams, Fred Lowery, B.F. Fritts, Fletcher B. Martin, and Joe Brown, and Miss Jessal Holtzclaw.

Thursday, Feb. 3

Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Staub of Knoxville announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Amy Staub, to Mr. Frank Barber Galyon. Miss Staub has been the frequent guest here of Mrs. John Fouche, and has many friends in the city. Mr. Galyon , also of Knoxville, attended McCallie School and is well-known here.

Mrs. E.T. Newell was hostess to the Long Distance Club, Wednesday. Guests were Mesdames Dunbar Newell, E.M. Durham, R.W. Barz, and S.R. Smith, Miss McPheeters, and Mrs. Imbrie.

Miss Maude Whiteside will go to Sewanee to attend the pre-Lenten dances.

Friday, Feb. 4

The body of John L. Taliaferro was found in driftwood 20 miles below Chattanooga at Blue Springs in James County. Funeral services will be held today at First Baptist Church with Dr. W.F. Powell officiating.
