What was happening in Chattanooga in 1966?



Saturday, Jan. 29

Frank Baisden, widely-known artist, former resident, and one of the founders of the Chattanooga Art Association, has agreed to come here for two months to assist in mounting the April and May exhibits at Hunter Art Gallery. Russell Thornton, gallery director for 13 years, has submitted his resignation effective Feb. 1, at which time the gallery will be closed for renovation and redecoration. Baisden was head of the art department at the University of Chattanooga for 16 years.

Sunday, Jan. 30

The Stardust Cruiser Manufacturing Co. is building a $100,000 plant that will enable it to double production of houseboat-cruisers, Sam S. Thatcher, Jr., president announced Saturday. The buildings in the new factory layout are being erected on an 11-acre site at the Southern Railroads Citico Yards.

Monday, Jan. 31, 1966

Tennessee Junior Miss title will be awarded Saturday night at Tivoli Theater. Twenty-one contestants are arriving to participate in the pageant Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The state competition is sponsored by the Red Bank Highland Jaycees.

Tuesday, Feb. 1

The United Fund during the past ten years has eliminated 303 campaigns and 63 supplementary letter drives, W. Roy Meyers, president of the United Fund, declared in his report to the annual meeting Tuesday. Meyers was re-elected president by the board of directors. Other officers elected were Joe H. Davenport, Jr., first vice president; R.C. Thatcher, Jr., second vice-president; Thomas A. Caldwell, Jr., third vice-president; and J.E. Whitaker, treasurer.

Wednesday, Feb. 2

Linda Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Foster Jones of Signal Mountain, a senior of Notre Dame High School, has been elected Queen of Junior Achievement of Chattanooga. She was in competition with 23 other candidates from the local JA organization. The new queen is president of Flamco, a midget business enterprise sponsored by the Chattanooga Gas Co.

Thursday, Feb. 3

Andresen & Co. announced Wednesday that David R. Telford is now associated with its Chattanooga Branch offices at 430 Pioneer Bank Bldg. as a registered representative. Andreson’s office opened early in January.

Friday, Feb. 4

During the next seven years, the Tennessee Department of Highways will build a total of 114 welcome and rest stations along the Interstate Highway system in the state. Tentative locations include I-75 and I-24 at Chattanooga, and I-24 near the Nickajack Dam.
