A Day in the Life
Rebecca Brockman
Since this is my first column in the award-winning Hamilton County Herald, I thought it would be fitting to tell you, my future readers, a little about myself. After living in Colorado Springs, Colo., for over 25 years, I married my college sweetheart and moved to Arkansas.
I know what you’re about to ask – what brought you to Arkansas from Colorado? It’s a question I get asked a few times a month. Here it goes: My husband’s dad is originally from Arkansas and my husband Parish decided to start a concrete company with his dad.
In June 2007, we got married and moved in a matter of two weeks. It was a lot of ‘news’ all at once – new person to live with, new state, new town, new job and new humid weather to get used to.
But over the past three plus years, I’ve acclimated well for the most part; (I’m still getting used to the realization that humidity takes over your life for four months out of the year and the Razorbacks are royalty).
We’ve lived in Little Rock for the past one-and-a-half years and enjoy the southern way of life. I have one furry child, Mona, my cat. You will find that most of my columns include something about either Parish or Mona, and sometimes both of them will appear.
If I’m not at work, I’m exercising, reading a book, laughing with Parish or trying to cook. Actually, my husband does all the cooking in our house. I’m not much of a domestic diva (yet) I’ve tried to make/bake very simple things that turn out awful. I’m sure I will share some of those adventures with you as well.
Since Parish takes care of our stomachs, I clean and take care of the rest of our two-bedroom apartment. It’s a great partnership!
Like I mentioned earlier, I love reading books. I started a book club when I moved here, and we’ve met once a month for the past three years. It’s a great, little group, and we’ve read some amazing and not so great books over the course of the past 36 months. We are always open to book suggestions, so feel free to send some on.
Prior to writing for The Daily Record, I worked as an executive assistant at the Colorado Press Association. The CPA was my first “real” job after graduating from the University of Northern Colorado. Journalism was my major in college and I minored in speech communication.
Working for this paper makes those four, grueling years of college so worth it. I truly enjoy writing for a newspaper and being able to share things with the community.
There is something intoxicating about being around newspapers; the smell and sound of a paper is so comforting to me. I guess I have a thing for paper, because I refuse to buy a Kindle or Nook. My books either come from the library or Barnes & Noble. In fact, I usually walk to the library by my humble abode to pick up a book I reserved online. How eco-friendly is that?
I guess that’s me in about 520 words. It’s odd to sum up your life in words, but it’s my job and I like it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my ramblings. I look forward to sharing my days with you.
