Mrs. Alvin Cole of Port Huron, Mich., is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Trimby on Missionary Ridge.
Kosmos entertained with a brilliant musicale in the Ballroom of Hotel Patten. Mrs. Albert Hastings, well-known violinist, was soloist. Miss O’Neal, pianist, and Paul Nixon, cellist, assisted. A reception followed. Mrs. M.N. Whitaker, president, headed the reception line.
Sunday, Jan. 23
Dr. P.D. Sims, for more than 50 years physician for contagious diseases for the City of Chattanooga, has resigned his active fieldwork but will continue as a consulting physician. Dr. J.H. Holman, assistant physician, has been appointed to fill his place.
The Rotarians first anniversary celebration was a brilliant social event. President W.B. Schwartz was toastmaster. More than 130 guests were present. The Hotel Patten was beautifully decorated for the affair. Dr. Charles Haven Meyers gave the invocation before the banquet and Mr. O.B. Andrews gave the address of welcome. Every lady received a lovely gift.
Mrs. Carrie Pickens was appointed chairman of the grounds at Hamilton County’s TB sanitarium, Pine Breeze, at a meeting of directors on Saturday.
Monday, Jan. 24
Rev. Charles Haven Meyers was formally ordained as pastor of Pilgrim Congregational Church.
There are so many men out of work, it is urged that money which has already been appropriated to improve Boynton Park and build a road to it, should be used now to get the work started. It would be of great help to those who are unemployed.
Mrs. C.C. Huntington called a meeting of the new chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution to meet at 10 o’clock Tuesday in the Courthouse club room for the purpose of organizing the Nancy Ward Chapter. All interested are invited.
Tuesday, Jan. 25
Miss Jane Haymore has returned from a visit in Wytheville and Bristol, Va. En route home, she visited Misses Louise Bradford and Louise Hamilton at Martha Washington College.
James A. Hannah, pioneer hotel and real estate man, was killed in the furnace room of the Tourist Hotel, allegedly by a discharged porter. He was brutally beaten with heavy pipes. After waiting a long time for her husband to return, Mrs. Hannah and a Mr. Hamilton, a guest of the hotel, went to look for Mr. Hannah, and found him on the floor in a pool of blood.
Brooks Brantley is at West Ellis Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendicitis.
Wednesday, Jan. 26
Mrs. W.P.D. Moross entertained with an informal tea at her home on Oak Street for her guest, Mrs. W.H. Pratt of Cleveland. The guest list included 49 close friends of the honoree.
Due to the smallpox epidemic, Judge Fleming had all who were on the docket to be “scratched.” Some 75 were vaccinated and all were willing and cooperative.
Thursday, Jan. 27
Presbyterian women gave a musical tea on Missionary Ridge at the home of Mrs. G.E. Black. The house was beautifully decorated, with spring flowers furnished by Mrs. Crouch, florist on the Ridge. Twenty-five dollars in silver was received.
Miss Johnnie Walker is visiting Miss Lyde Barnes. She will later be the guest of Miss Frances Henderson.
Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Underwood will return the last of the week from a stay in Florida.
Friday, Jan. 28
Invitations have been issued by Mrs. Wilson Kerr to the wedding of her daughter, Margaret, to Mr. L. DeKalb Worsham. The wedding is to be in the Christian Church, Feb. 10 at five o’clock.
Miss Bess Acree of Clarksville, Tenn., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Brock on Missionary Ridge.
The University of Chattanooga student body installed new officers for the second semester. The new president will be DeForrest Spencer. He succeeds Rufus G. Breland.
