The Chattanooga Bach Choir will continue its Barnett & Company Cantata Series on Sunday, Jan. 21, 4 p.m., at Christ Church Episcopal, 663 Douglas St. Admission is $15; students are free. The program will feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Lord, as you will, so let it be done with me,” written for the third Sunday after Epiphany. A motet by Renaissance master Josquin des Prez, “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?” and J.S. Bach’s “Come Holy Ghost,” from the Leipzig Chorales for solo organ, will complete the program. Guest soloists will include: Cynthia Johnson, soprano; James Harr, tenor; and Zachary James Cavan, bass.
E.A. Anderson Lecture Series
Beginning Monday, Jan. 22, Southern Adventist University will present its 50th annual E.A. Anderson Lecture Series. Hosted by the School of Business, it features guest speakers who share elements of the business world. The lectures are open to the public and continuing education credit is offered.
The series was established in honor of Eugene Anderson, a businessman in Atlanta who served on Southern’s Board of Trustees and made substantial monetary contributions.
The E.A. Anderson lectures will be held most Mondays from Jan. 22 to April 2 at 7 p.m. in Brock Hall, room 3205, on the university’s campus in Collegedale. The first talk features Evie VandeVere, the first women’s ministries director in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and wife of the late Wayne VandeVere, chair of Southern’s business department when the lecture series was founded 50 years ago.

Skeeter Shelton at Barking Legs
Called “one of the great unsung saxophonists in Free Jazz,” Skeeter Shelton will bring his “fiery, relentlessly creative playing” from Detroit to Chattanooga with his duo Spectrum 2, featuring double bassist Joel Peterson, for a rare performance that will be free and open to the public as part of Barking Legs’ Jazz in the Lounge weekly series. The performance will take place Wednesday, Jan. 24, 7 p.m., at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave.
Katz and Nowak to celebrate ‘The New Localism’
Bruce Katz, Centennial Scholar at the Brookings Institution, and Jeremy Nowak from the Drexel University Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation to Chattanooga will sign copies of their new book, “The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism” at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 29 at the Edney Innovation Center, 1100 Market St. Katz will give remarks at 5:30 p.m. A panel discussion with Nowak and Mayor Andy Berke, moderated by Marcus Shaw of Co.Lab, will follow.
Annual Mardi Gras Ball
The Chattanooga chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women will present its annual Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center. In addition to scholarships, the organization will use the funds raised to continue operating its Sista-to-Sista Mentoring Program at Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.
Tickets for the Mardi Gras Ball can be purchased from any NCBW member or from Chic Beauty Salon, 3715 Brainerd Road. Seating for eight is reserved. Tickets cost $55 per person and are tax deductible. Attire will be formal.
