What was going on in Chattanooga in 1912?



Saturday, January 18

One thousand Boy Scouts of Kansas City, Mo., and scores of citizens have each pledged a square inch of skin to save the life of little 10-year old Reba Hainds, who was the only member of her family saved when their home was destroyed by fire Christmas Eve. The family lived in Arnett, Okla. Physicians say that skin graft is probably the only way to save her life. (Editor’s note: A genealogy search found a Hainds, Reba J. was born Feb. 23, 1902 and died Nov. 22, 1999 in Kansas.)

Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Finlay entertained at their new home in Fort Wood with an elegantly appointed party to celebrate their second wedding anniversary. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. J. Edmondson Smartt, Misses Rowena Sizer, Mary Lynn Carter, Florence Clift, and Elizabeth Hill, and Messrs. George Smartt, Paul Campbell, Charles Coffey, and Hugh Crumbliss.

Miss Alleen Peeples will leave next week for Alexandria, La., to attend a house party given by Miss Stella Brenner. She will remain for Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Sunday, January 20

Mrs. L. M. Russell entertained with a luncheon Saturday in honor of Mrs. J. Anderson Shelton, a recent bride. Invited were Mrs. J.B. Lauderbach, Mrs. N.C. Carter, and Misses Alpha Davis, Marguerite Aull, Lilly Schwartz, Claudia Frazier, and Ceclia Embry.

This week has two interesting theatrical entertainments. At the Bijou will be “Whose Little Girl Are You,” with William B. Morris and Grace Thurston as stars. At the Lyric, George Evans and his Honey Boy Minstrels will put on spectacular show. Mr. Evans will play “Cicero Didimus Jones” and “General Woof Woof.”

Monday, January 20

Mr. and Mrs. Si Golibart and Victor Golibart of Whiteside, Tenn., spent the weekend in Chattanooga.

Miss Grace McCallie chaperoned the following seniors of Girls Preparatory School to Atlanta, where they were the guests of Agnes Scott College. In the group were Misses Madoline Pemberton, Louise Spears, Nancy Sizer, Mary Mitchell, Frances Thatcher, Katherine Wiggs, Florence Flint, and Emily Miller. They will return Monday.

Tuesday, January 21

Miss Mary Sprinkel of Harrisburg, Va., who has been visiting Miss Helen Kline, left Monday for Florence, Ala.

W.F. Hutcheson and Sam Hutcheson left Monday for a trip to Florida and Panama.

Miss Mabel Van Dusen will leave today for a visit with friends in Gadsden, Ala.

Wednesday, January 22

W.S. Milne, accompanied by his brother, Jack Milne of Cleveland, Tenn., was in the city Tuesday to look over the site of the new Milne chair factory. Work on the grading has begun for the plant, which will be located in the Churchville area.

Dr. Henry Berlin is recovering from an illness.

Mr. and Mrs. John Brazleton of Montana are spending a month at the “Nathalie.” They are relatives of Mrs. Max Milligan and Miss Mary Ross.

Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Tyler and Miss Ethel Tyler will leave soon for a stay in Florida.

An inspiring evening with music, art and poetry was held by the Chattanooga Chapter of Euterpean Fraternity at the City Auditorium, with a large enthusiastic crowd in attendance. Dr. J.W. Bachman and Dr. Charles H. Meyers spoke of the enjoyable program and presented the founder, William M. Derthick of Chicago. The program was handled admirably, projecting all the talents, with local artists participating.

Thursday, June 23

Miss Margaret Anderson, granddaughter of Dr. J.W. Bachman, has been chosen by Major General John P. Hickman as one of the maids of honor for the Confederate Reunion to be held in Chattanooga in May. The sponsor selected is Miss Mary I. Cox, daughter of ex-Governor John I. Cox.

Edward Oehmig is home from Georgia Tech to spend two weeks with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Oehmig on East 5th Street.

An interesting nuptial event was when a well-known Chattanoogan, Mrs. Rachel Landis Raines, became the bride of a very prominent surgeon, Dr. E.P. Lacey of Bessemer, Ala. The ceremony was performed at the bride’s home by Dr. Everett St. Clair Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., a brother-in-law of the bride.

Friday, January 24

Miss Julia McCall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warner S. McCall of St. Louis, was married to Stanley Masters of St. Louis at her home Wednesday evening. Warner McCall, a brother of Howard McCall, formerly lived in Chattanooga.
