MLK Day of Service
East Chattanooga will be the focus of this year’s MLK Day of Service.
On Monday, Jan. 16, volunteers will gather on Glass Street and then fan out into the neighborhoods of East Chattanooga to landscape, clear debris, do trail maintenance, and paint and deep clean.
Volunteers will also make improvements at four youth and family development centers: East Chattanooga, Eastdale, Brainerd and Carver.
The day of service will include not only beautification projects but also education and outreach. This year, volunteers will be making rounds at apartments across Chattanooga to provide residents with information on their rights under the fair housing law.
Volunteer check-in will take place from 8:30-9 a.m. at the Glass House Collective (Glass Street and North Chamberlain Avenue). Service projects will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. For more information, visit bit.ly/MLKDayCHA2017.

Stockwell to speak at Possibilities Luncheon
U.S. Army 1st Lt. Melissa Stockwell will speak at this year’s Possibilities: Siskin Hospital Celebrates Life Beyond Disability Luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
Stockwell’s tour of active service in Baghdad ended when a roadside bomb blasted the Humvee in which she was riding. When she awoke in the Baghdad ER, still in her army fatigues, she realized she’d lost her left leg.
The first female American soldier to lose a limb in active duty in Iraq, Stockwell worked through months of physical rehabilitation, which included learning to walk on her prosthetic leg, and went on to become a three-time world champion and two-time Paralympian who won the Paralympic Bronze Medal in the triathlon.
The Possibilities Luncheon is Siskin Hospital’s only community-wide fundraising event. The proceeds provide needed services for patients without adequate insurance to cover the cost of their care.
To purchase tickets or sponsor a table of eight, contact Donna Deweese at (423) 634-1208 or ddeweese@siskinrehab.org. Online registration and donation opportunities are available by visiting www.SiskinRehab.org.
