Members of the Justices Ray L. Brock Jr. - Robert E. Cooper American Inn of Court recently presented Legal Aid of East Tennessee with a check for $11,040. The Inn raised the money in just one hour during its annual holiday party and auction.
LAET is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal advice and representation in civil cases to low-income, elderly, disabled and abused Tennesseans who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
An Inn of Court is an organization dedicated to improving the skills, professionalism, ethics and civility of lawyers and judges. Membership is by invitation only. The Chattanooga chapter is composed of over 100 local judges and lawyers.
“The Chattanooga Inn of Court’s donation helps ensure that Legal Aid can continue to deliver ‘justice for all’ to the thousands of people in our community who, without the help of a lawyer, would be left homeless, denied their legal benefits, or trapped in abusive relationships,” says Sheri Fox, executive director of Legal Aid of East Tennessee and 2018-19 Inn president.
“Because we do not charge for our services, Legal Aid depends upon grants and private donations like this one to pay the lawyers, paralegals, and other professionals who have devoted their careers to delivering justice to our most vulnerable citizens.”
Attorney Adam Izell, who helped coordinate the auction, says he was amazed by the generosity of the local businesses and individuals who donated items.
“I’m equally amazed by the generosity of the Inn’s members and their guests who attend the event each year and purchase the donated items, usually for far more than their retail value.”
