Saturday, January 11

At a meeting of the University of Tennessee trustees, the merger of Memphis Hospital Medical College and the University of Tennessee was completed. Dr. Ayers of UT said the college would have an enrollment of 400.

Miss Rowena Sauls is very ill at her home on Vine Street.

Sunday, January 12

Five branches of the Chattanooga Public Library have been established, carrying books to rural centers. Dr. John H. Race, president of the Library Board, J.J. Mahoney, secretary, and Miss Margaret Dunlap, librarian, visited high schools in Hixson, Soddy, Tyner, Sale Creek and Lookout Mountain. Each principal and the students were told how to use and enjoy the books. Prof. J.T. Jones, Hixson, was named chairman. At Tyner, W.W. Majors, principal, entertained the library board visitors with coffee served by the Domestic Science class.

A surprise wedding took place last evening at the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. J.H. Patton on East 5th Street, when Miss Edna May McNeal and T.A. Erwin were married by Dr. J.W. Bachman. Upon return from their wedding trip, they will be at home at 414 Lindsay Street. The bride is a graduate of the Toronto Conservatory of Music in Canada.

Pierre Hellerstedt left Friday for El Paso, Texas, to visit his brother.

Miss Margaret Pritchard will return this week from a visit in North Carolina.

Monday, January 13

Dr. William S. Bovard, vice-president of the University of Chattanooga since 1909, has resigned to accept the position of Secretary of the Methodist Brotherhood of the general organization of men in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He will be located in New York.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Mahoney have returned from a stay in Atlanta.

George Hixon has been to St. Louis to find his brother, Paschal Hixon, who left home many years ago thinking he had been disinherited. George wanted to personally tell his brother of their inheritance of $150,000 from their father who died a few weeks ago. He was unsuccessful, but before he reached home, the St. Louis police located the missing brother.

Tuesday, January 14

Miss Roberta Stauffer of Pittsburgh, Pa., is the guest of Mrs. Henry Crumbliss on West 6th Street.

Mrs. Raymond Wallace will leave Thursday for Norfolk, Va., to visit her mother.

Mrs. Garnett Andrews will entertain the “Court of Kirmess” and the “Parisian Dancers,” of which she is one of the chaperones, Friday with a buffet supper at her home on East 4th Street.

Wednesday, January 15

The chief social event of the season was the wedding of Sarah Cooper Holtzclaw and Thomas C. Thompson, Jr. The wedding was solemnized at the home of the bride. An informal reception followed the wedding. Leaving on an extended trip, the couple will be at home upon return with the groom’s parents on High Street.

Miss Madge Tarwater of Rockwood is the guest of Miss Lucille Carter. She will return to Knoxville to continue her visit with her sister, Mrs. Wright. She had been a guest at the Holtzclaw–Thompson wedding.

Johnny Dobbs packed his portemanteau and left for Montgomery, where he will be manager of the Montgomery team in the Dixie League.

Thursday, January 16

One of the most interesting meetings of the Women’s Missionary Society of the First Presbyterian Church was held yesterday. Mrs. W.C. Stephens, president, presided. Mrs. M.J. Headrick, an early member, Mrs. J.H. Warner, a charter member, and Mrs. Anna Bachman Hyde told of the early meetings. The Society was organized Nov. 10, 1859 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Crutchfield. Mrs. T.H. McCallie was elected president.

Miss Alline Payne and Herbert Bennett were married in St. George’s Chapel of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church yesterday. After a wedding trip, they will be at home in the Shelton Apartments on Walnut Street. Mrs. Bennett is the daughter of Mrs. Mary E. Payne and the sister of Ishmael Payne.

Friday, January 17

Miss Lutie McFarland of Knoxville is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Roy Crumbliss, in the Robinson Apartments.

Mrs. Charles Murray of Atlanta, who is the guest of the Misses Holtzclaw, will go next week to visit Mrs. Howard McCall.

Miss Marie Gager will return today from a visit with her sister, Mrs. Colonel Gatewood, in Mt. Sterling, Ky.
