Race for the Cure shines spotlight on enduring problem
Sarah Bowen, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is sitting in Panera on Market Street, an unsipped cup of coffee cooling in front of her as she discusses this year’s Race for the Cure. Although she’s been making the rounds among the local media, her passion for saving lives and ending breast cancer is undiminished, so she talks at length not only about the upcoming fundraiser but also about educating the public and connecting with the less advantaged to help them take preventive measures.
Cornerstones, Inc., to host Wine over Water event
At 2,376 feet long, the Walnut Street Bridge is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. Built in 1890, the structure was the first to connect the north and south shores of the Tennessee River, which, at the time the bridge was constructed, were segregated by race.

I arrived at the Endoscopy Center of Arkansas around 8:15 a.m. on a Monday. I know what you’re thinking. The same thing I would be. “That’s already too much information!” or “Stop right there.”

Weekly Indulgence
My first visits to Chattanooga Billiard Club downtown were for one reason – to play pool. I fell in love with that place the first time I walked in the door. Up those treacherous stairs I climbed to find an after-hours hang out I would soon call my favorite in town. I loved the atmosphere, the jukebox and the choice of pay-by-the-hour and pay-by-the-game tables. That very first night, the service staff took great care of me and I knew I’d be back again.
Hamilton County Fair to usher in autumn with annual festivities
Hamilton County has its ways of letting folks know fall has arrived. The color that blankets Lookout Mountain, for example, changes from summer green to autumn red. Also, the breeze that cuts across Chickamauga Lake is cooler. And during the last weekend of September, more than 50,000 residents make their way to Chester Frost Park for the annual County Fair.
Disc-catching canines to invade Chattanooga for championship event
Chattanooga is going to the dogs! On September 26 and 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., man’s best friend will take to the skies to compete in the 2009 Hyperflight Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Championship, to be held at AT&T Field, home of the Chattanooga Lookouts. The event will feature top teams from around the world. The contestants and their canine teammates will earn points for tricks ranging from simple throws to spectacular
UTC professor speaks to Women’s Council about health care
At the recent meeting of the Women’s Council of Realtors, president-elect Cheree Dumas introduced the speaker, Dr. Bruce Hutchinson, as an officer in the navy who holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He has taught at Emory University, Virginia Military Institute, Berry College, Central Michigan University and currently teaches at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in the economics department.
Course to teach Realtors what they don’t know about Microsoft
Continuing education classes are offered regularly at the Chattanooga Association of Realtors, and they span a variety of topics, from adapting business plans to the current economy to becoming more “green” and reducing carbon footprints.
Every now and then, a course comes along that addresses topics most Realtors – and everyone else in the world, for that matter – think they’ve already mastered. One such course, Marketing with Microsoft, is coming to the Chattanooga Association of Realtors at the end of the month, and it aims to teach its students more about Microsoft than they have ever learned before.
Kay's Cooking Corner
This may be my last week to pinch hit for my sister and while it has truly been a lot of fun as well as a real learning experience for me, I’m sure you will be extremely happy to get Kay’s words of cooking knowledge back! I hope you have enjoyed reading my column the last two weeks and hopefully I have said something meaningful to at least one person on the topic of either Alzheimer’s or heart disease. And I sure hope you liked my recipes, too!
The Critic's Corner
Have you ever enjoyed a movie so much that when it ended, you didn’t want to leave the theater? Maybe you stayed in your seat through the credits, hoping that when they were done, the movie would pick back up where it left off and you could follow the characters from there. That’s the way I felt as “(500) Days of Summer” faded to black after 95 minutes; I wanted to see what transpired when Tom Hansen met Autumn for coffee.
