Judge Durby enjoys variety in life, court and Chattanooga

Honorable Ronald Durby grew up in Memphis and attended college at the University of Alabama. After receiving a degree with a minor in biology and a major in physical education, he began a career as a football coach.
Durby spent a year coaching high school in Jasper, Ala., and then moved to Kentucky, where he coached two years at Morehead State University. The whole time, then-University of Chattanooga coach Scrappy Moore had been trying to recruit Durby to come coach on his staff. When Moore retired, Harold Wilkes became head coach of the football team. He must have been a bit more convincing.

Chattanooga Fire Chief Randy Parker looks back, ahead

Chattanooga Fire Chief Randy Parker is probably the luckiest member of his department. The reason has nothing to do with his longevity on the job, or his position of authority or a history of close calls. Parker is fortunate because after spending nearly his entire career working for the Chattanooga Fire Department, he’s managed to escape without a nickname.

Are We There Yet?
The walking man
“Where’s home for you?” a stranger asks a fellow traveler on a plane.
“Wherever she is,” comes the reply, as the man points at his wife.
— “Words I wish I wrote” by Robert Fulghum
“Let’s take a walk down by the river,” came the suggestion from my wife.

I Swear...
Humor’s still out there in the law (just ask Andy McClurg)
I guess I’m only six years behind.
I’ve just now learned of a 1993 publication titled “Amicus Humoriae - An Anthology of Legal Humor,” compiled by Robert M. Jarvis, Thomas E. Baker and Andrew J. McClurg.
Yes, that’s Andy McClurg, who used to teach at the Bowen School of Law and who wrote a humor column in the ABA Journal for four years.

Weekly Indulgence
Jimmy John’s was started in 1983 by a guy named (what else?) Jimmy John in Charleston, Ill. When he opened his first store, he’d intended on starting a hot dog shop. Once he realized the cost of the equipment required to run a hot dog shop, he changed his vision to sandwiches.

Kidney Foundation helps sufferers deal with disease

Being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease can feel like the end of the world. The Kidney Foundation of the Greater Chattanooga Area, however, works to help sufferers make the transition to a new way of life and minimize the emotional and financial impact of end-stage renal failure.

Outdoor Chattanooga sets sights on becoming outdoor hub in the city

Children learn at an early age that it’s a joy to be outside. The space beyond their front door provides an unlimited canvas for fun and games. But adults spend most of their time indoors, primarily because that’s where most of them work. Outdoor Chattanooga wants them to get more fresh air.

CIC to host second bankers panel meeting, free to CAR

After spending five years on Hilton Head Island, Jeff Jennings returned to Chattanooga with one thing in mind. He’d witnessed firsthand the progression of the Hilton Head residential real estate market, and he was focused on trying his own hand in the industry.

From wallflower to life abundant: one woman’s story

Realtor Vickie Henderson knows how to make a great first impression. She turns the corner down the hall from the front desk at Remax Properties on Shallowford Road, extends her right hand and walks briskly forward. Her handshake is as firm as her posture, and her “Hello” comes with a pleasant smile. It’s all standard protocol, of course, but it feels as genuine as her Southern accent.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Many people do not care for meat. I love chicken, pork and sausage, but I could probably do without red meat and it would never bother me. However, if you are one of those who doesn’t even eat chicken or pork, then here is a great recipe for you: Spaghetti squash with roasted roma tomato sauce. It is a great dish without meat, but I suggest serving it with some pan-fried or grilled Italian sausages.

The Critic's Corner
This summer, we’ve been treated to several science fiction blockbusters that cost well over $100 million to make, including “Star Trek,” “Terminator: Salvation” and “Transformers 2.” This Christmas, “Avatar” will hit screens with a price tag of a reported $300 million.
