Attorney enjoying stability in life and practice

Laura Ketcham once stood within arm’s reach of history. And what she saw set her on a new path that led her to where she is today.

As a high school student, Ketcham envisioned a career in politics. She didn’t want to be an elected official, but she saw herself doing something within the political arena. Her parents allowed her to pursue opportunities that would expose her to new things, so she was able to spend a summer in Washington, D.C., working as a Congressional intern. The experience spurred her interest, and she wound up working in Vice President Al Gore’s office while attending Vanderbilt University.

Three attorneys took a step toward becoming people of impact in their community when they graduated from Leadership Chattanooga in May.

Larkins moves family law practice to Hixson Pike

The walls at the office of attorney Angela Larkins might need another coat of paint, but that’s okay. She’s just happy to have some walls to call her own.

For the last seven years, Larkins, a seasoned family law attorney, has worked out of a rented 900 square foot space behind a dumpster on the North Shore. While she liked practicing alone, space was tight.

Liberty Tower and Chambliss earn LEED Gold Certification

Additionally, Liberty Tower is now the largest LEED v2009 Gold certified core and shell project in Tennessee at nearly 214,000 square feet.

Celebrate Father’s Day by investing in your children’s future
Financial Focus

Father’s Day is almost here. If you’re a father, especially one with young children, get ready to add to your collection of homemade cards, ties, golf tees or other such gifts designed to please you. Your greatest gift, of course, is your children – and you would doubtlessly get great satisfaction from knowing that you’ve provided them with financial resources that can benefit their lives in many ways. So, why not use this Father’s Day as a starting point for investing in your children’s futures?

Common courtesies for home buyers
Realtor Association President's Message

We often reference the Code of Ethics, which is an excellent guide for Realtors in how they should interact with clients, customers, and fellow Realtors. Yet, we haven’t spent much time talking about the behaviors of buyers and sellers during the home search process. A seller recently went on a social media rant in response to certain buyer behaviors we thought worth sharing.

Exit Realty Scenic City making inroads in Chattanooga

Myra Cochran doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve, she wears it on the lapel of her turquoise blue jacket.  The heart-shaped pin, which matches her outfit, makes a simple statement about her: she loves being a Realtor.

Cochran’s lapel is also home to a second pin consisting of a single word spelled in all caps: “EXIT,” the name of the real estate company for which she is the broker of record. If her heart is in real estate, then her mind is focused on making the newly launched EXIT Realty Scenic City a place where other Realtors can thrive.

Quick and dirty ‘Spy’ FAQ
The Critic's Corner

Here’s your quick and dirty FAQ for the movie “Spy,” a new action comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, and Jason Statham. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst and the unsung hero behind the agency’s most dangerous missions. When her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a global disaster. Now, on to the questions.

Summertime corn salad – a winning picnic side!
Kay's Cooking Corner

Every time I visit my hairdresser to get my hair trimmed (along with my gray covered), she turns her TV to the Food Network Channel. She knows I write about, cook, and eat a lot of food, and that I’ve been cooking since I was able reach the stove by standing on a chair alongside my mom and granny. Well, maybe some of that is a little exaggerated, but some of it is true.

Are We There Yet?

Coming back from UALR on 630 to downtown Little Rock Friday afternoon, the traffic came to an abrupt stop around Pine Street. I looked in the rearview mirror, praying the woman with the cell phone would stop before killing me and ruining my three-day weekend. She did, but not before squealing the tires on her Olds 98, a car I have fond memories of, and one that would have pulverized my Honda.

Building a better future together: Celebrating National Homeownership Month
USDA Rural Development

As National Homeownership Month begins, we think of the many rural families who have built their homes with their own hands – and have, quite literally, worked up a sweat as they toiled to build a better future through homeownership.

Farewell, again, Charlie
I Swear

Charles Schulz died Feb. 12, 2000. This column ran March 3, 2000. There is no connection between this column and today’s I Swear Crossword.

We’ve been saying goodbye to the creator of “Peanuts.” Others, especially columnists and cartoonists, have likewise been saying farewell.

Pearl wants to play catch
Read All About It

The other night, after attending Wednesday prayer meeting, I returned home and parked my  game of catch in the driveway. While doing so, something strange happened with my fairly new pickup. With the two of us outside in the driveway, the truck locked all four doors. This was followed by the usual beeping sound and the flashing of lights, as if I’d pushed the button on the keys.

Change your life with Epsom salt
Do It Yourself

Epsom salt is a coarse salt that you can purchase by the carton at your local grocery. Many people have no clue of the overwhelming uses for this wonderful, natural magnesium. Usually you would only think of it when it comes to taking a bath for aches and pains, which I always remind my mother of after she works on anything for too long. While it helps fight minor health issues, it is also great for other uses around the home. With the low cost and versatility, you can’t go wrong picking up a carton the next time you head out to the store.

Brainbuster - Make Your Brain Tingle

If you are planning to travel abroad this summer, you should brush up on some of the traditional superstitions. Try your hand with these.

1. Those of you who attend a Jewish wedding might be surprised at the sight of the groom stepping on a glass and breaking it at the end of the event. What is the commemoration of this custom? The birth of his mother-in-law; the ruin of the first Holy Temple; The Wall Street crash; The great Safed earthquake.
