An environment to promote healing
Siskin Hospital looks to transform main campus with cluster of ‘healing gardens’

“Everything you and I take for granted can be gone in an instant,” says Dr. Matthew Gibson. “A traumatic event can immediately take away our ability to exercise, drive to work and wash the dishes.”

Gibson is the president and CEO of Siskin Hospital, a physical rehabilitation facility in Chattanooga. As he describes the devastating circumstances that bring patients to Siskin’s downtown campus or one of its five outpatient clinics, he praises the physical, occupational and speech therapists who coax the human body into healing itself.

Catanzaro guiding Speech and Hearing plan

Attorney Jim Catanzaro, Jr., of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel says it’s imperative for him contribute to the greater Chattanooga community both in a professional capacity and as a volunteer.

As a lawyer, Catanzaro provides legal advice and representation for health care entities and nonprofits. As a volunteer, he’s lending his professional expertise, as well as his perspective as a citizen, to the boards of Goodwill Industries, the United Way, Reflection Riding and the Chattanooga Food Bank, where he’s served as chairman.

Learning to be ‘businesspeople’
Mother, daughter work together to build strong firm

Frances Vantrease was freshly widowed in 1985 when she landed a job as manager of East Lake Courts, a public housing complex in Chattanooga.

“I hadn’t worked in 16 years and I needed a job,” she says. “So, I registered with a temp agency, which sent me to the Chattanooga Housing Authority.”

Building wealth through homeownership

When you’re a Realtor, you realize everyone’s housing needs are different. Some people are looking to expand to make room for a larger family, while other folks are downsizing to have a space that’s more comfortable for their needs.

Increase the vaulue of your home’s with renovations

Remodeling projects are an excellent way for homeowners to increase functionality and add beauty to their homes.

Additionally, if you intend to sell your current home soon, the projects you tackle today can pay off in the future.

Depending on the type of remodeling project, improvements can add to your home’s resale value. However, not all remodeling projects are equal when generating the greatest resale value for homeowners.

Rogers column: Some highlights, lowlights of 2023 legislative session

If the intent of state legislators this past session was to raise Tennessee’s profile on the national stage while simultaneously lowering its stature, it’s hard to imagine how they could have been more successful.

From Nashville bashing to drag show trashing to transgender-care smashing to gun-safety dashing, they hit the ground stumbling and never looked back. And I didn’t even mention the two members they ignominiously booted only to have them back within days.

Financial Focus: Can you benefit from a 529 plan?

Another school year is coming to a close. And if you have young children, they’re now a year closer to heading off to college or some other type of post-secondary education or training. So, if you haven’t already done so, you may want to start preparing for these costs.

Personal Finance: Audit your credit cards for greater savings options

Credit card rewards help our family save money on groceries, gas and other necessities. We also use rewards for airline tickets, hotel rooms and airport lounge access.

We’re in good company. Most Americans have at least one rewards card, and nearly half of rewards cardholders are using their perks to help offset rising inflation, a 2022 Wells Fargo survey reports.

Millennial Money: Setting up a trust for someone with mental illness

More than 50% of Americans will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder during their lifetime, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. Chances are, some of these individuals will be inheriting wealth at some point.

If a family member’s mental health issues may interfere with their ability to manage finances, answering these questions could help them create long-term financial stability.

Team Purcell earns annual sales production award

Mike and Brenda Purcell of RE/MAX Renaissance have earned the RE/MAX 100% Club Award, which recognizes high-achieving real estate professionals for their service to buyers and sellers during the past year.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor,” says Brenda Purcell. “We’re fully committed to helping our clients and consumers find a home that’s right for them.”

Titans didn’t get immediate help they needed

The Tennessee Titans needed to find two to three plug-and-play starters in the 2023 NFL Draft to shore up the roster for the coming season.

But when the draft – new general manager Ran Carthon’s first – was over, the Titans had fallen far short of that goal.

High hopes for local longshot

The Titans waited until their very last pick to select a receiver in last weekend’s draft, and when they did it was a local player who was a two-star recruit from Wilson Central who made good on his opportunity at UT Martin.

Colton Dowell was chosen at No. 228 overall by the Titans and is the sole wideout in a draft where the Titans came in needing major help at the position.

Wright stuff: Lineman has Vols back in Round 1 discussion

Darnell Wright began steadily moving up several mock projections as the 2023 NFL Draft approached. The Tennessee offensive tackle impressed many with his size and skill and was forecast as a potential top 10 pick.

Surrounded by friends and family at a draft party in Knoxville, Wright’s dreams came to fruition when the Chicago Bears selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in the first round of the draft.

Endless summer: top convertibles picks for ’23

The arrival of warmer weather across the U.S. will soon have a number of shoppers considering a wind-in-the-hair convertible. That’s because, for many people, having limitless headroom and a mobile means of sunbathing is automobile nirvana – though perhaps not for drivers who prefer loose-fitting hats.
