Losses? Let’s not speak of those
UTC volleyball director brings edge to new role

Volleyball coach Julie Torbett doesn’t just hate to lose, she hates losing more than she loves winning.

Not that Torbett, 53, doesn’t love to win. During 28 years of coaching college volleyball at the mid-major level, she’s tallied 465 victories, some of which are cemented in her memory.

Etchells embraces new responsibilities with Chambliss

Attorney Kelly Etchells’ days as a carefree associate at Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel are over (she calls this phase of her career her “worker bee years”) and she is now a shareholder of the firm.

Etchells, 34, knows this new chapter in her practice comes with an uptick in responsibility and expectations – but she says Chambliss has been preparing her for this moment since she joined the firm in 2017.

Keller Williams passes $100M mark

Keller Williams Commercial topped $100 million in volume for the first time in 2021, reports the division, which includes agents from KW Greater Downtown and KW Greater Chattanooga in East Brainerd.

Agents produced $100,318,240 in closed volume in 2021, with KW Greater Downtown accounting for 82% of that production. The previous high for the group was close to $82 million.

How much do you need for a down payment? Probably less than you think

In my years as a Realtor, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many different types of clients – from young people looking to purchase their first home to older people hoping to find a smaller, more manageable property.

While every situation is different, the one thing I’ve found to be universally true is the misconception of the size of the down payment buyers need to make to purchase a home.

Chattanooga’s Matt McGauley named THDA board chairman

Governor Bill Lee has named Chattanooga-area commercial real estate developer Matt McGauley as the chairman of the Tennessee Housing Development Agency board of directors.

McGauley, 42, is the fourth-generation president and CEO of Fidelity Trust Company. The company manages and owns a portfolio of commercial properties in Chattanooga and features development, brokerage and management divisions.

Top athletes finally cashing in on name, image, likeness change
Good news for big names while others wait for opportunities

Scotty Pippen Jr., Donovan Sims and Uros Plavsic come from vastly different backgrounds but have this much in common: They all play college basketball in Tennessee and are among the hundreds of the state’s collegiate athletes – joined by thousands nationwide – that have taken advantage of the name, image, likeness (NIL) opportunities now afforded them.

Rogers column: Word games leave me weary. Hey, ‘weary’ is 5 letters

A word or two of praise here for Wordle, the latest word in viral internet wordplay.

Do you Wordle? I don’t. Despite a career built entirely on words, I’ve never been much interested in their value as pastime pursuits.

Crossword puzzles? Yawn. Scrabble? Meh. Anagram jumbles? Bleh. Those big grids that invite you to see how many actual words you can find concealed amid the random letters? No chance.

Financial Focus: Watch for changes in RMDs

If you’re a certain age, you’ll need to withdraw money from some of your retirement accounts each year. But in 2022, the amount you must take out may be changing more than in other years – and that could affect your retirement income strategy.

Personal Finance: How your parents’ debts could outlive them

Many people believe one of two common myths when a parent dies in debt, says Chicago estate planning attorney Michael Whitty. The first myth is that an adult child will become liable for their parents’ debt. The second myth is that they can’t.

Titans don’t have cash for free agent spending

Where do they go from here? That is the biggest question regarding the Tennessee Titans in the immediate aftermath of their loss in the AFC Divisional Playoffs.

It is probably small consolation to the Titans that the upstart Cincinnati Bengals pulled another upset this past week in Kansas City to move on to Super Bowl LVI to face the Los Angeles Rams.

Vrabel has coordinator’s back as fans look for offensive answers

While change is inevitable in the NFL, don’t look for Titans coach Mike Vrabel to alter his core beliefs and personnel after the team’s hasty playoff exit.

That means Ryan Tannehill will be back under center in 2022. The team will not make a blockbuster deal for Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson should they become available.

Mortgage future for one Super Bowl? Rams banking on all-in strategy

Many people expected the Los Angeles Rams to be in Super Bowl LVI, which will be played Feb. 13 in their home stadium.

Few expected the Cincinnati Bengals to be their opponent. Vegas was even befuddled, with 200:1 odds at the start of the season of the Bengals winning the Super Bowl, per the Action Network.

Behind the Wheel: Tough to pry Pilot from category’s driver’s seat

The Honda Pilot has long been a favorite for three-row SUV shoppers, offering multi-passenger safety, comfort, cargo and convenience, all while remaining affordable and fuel-efficient. But the current-generation Pilot is getting on in years, having debuted for the 2016 model year, and that’s left the door open for some competitors.
