The Chattanooga Civitan Club Friday gave a check for $2,500 to Bonny Oaks School for the purchase of equipment and

Bar Association planning new attorney mentoring program
During the annual Chattanooga Bar Association Luncheon in January, the newly appointed president of the organization, attorney John Rice, slipped something intriguing into his acceptance speech. He said he wants to see a return of the mentoring relationships that helped to shape the generation of lawyers now defined by their experience, wisdom and gray hair. What form would the relationships take? He didn’t say.
Weill & Long law firm boasts a talented, flourishing history
The Weill & Long law firm has a rich history overflowing with lawyers who constantly used their education and professional knowledge to make the world both locally and globally, a better place.
Weill and Long began as a modest sized firm when T. Turley Rankin and Fred Frazier combined their talents and created Rankin & Frazier in 1914, housing themselves in offices on the 11th floor of the Volunteer Building. Prior to partnering with Rankin, Frazier had been in a partnership with another attorney. Rankin began practicing law in 1906 and was a member and shareholder of the Chattanooga Bar Association, which was established just nine years before. He also served as a member of the CBA’s grievance committee in 1909 and secretary-treasurer in 1911.

(Cold) truth in advertising, New York and D.C. style
I took some time away from the Levison Towers recently. With the Midwest under a blanket of snow, anywhere seemed like a better place to be. I called Kathi in the firm’s travel department. She made a few calls, and said that while she couldn’t get us anything extremely warm, we could find something slightly less arctic. Evidently, Kathi has a worse understanding of geography than I do – she sent us to New York.

Corporacion Euanitos, S.A., et al v. Montlake Properties, Inc. et al
Hamilton County – Corporacion Euanitos, S.A. (“Plaintiff”) sued Montlake Properties, Inc.; Montlake Property Owners Association, Inc.; and Luken Properties, LLC seeking, in part, a restraining order and a permanent injunction prohibiting the defendants from pumping water from a lake, Montlake, located in Hamilton County. After a trial, the Trial Court entered its order finding and holding, inter alia, “[t]hat Luken Properties, LLC, has an easement right to withdraw water from Montlake.” Plaintiff appeals to this Court. We affirm.

Born to run
We can’t all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by. – Will Rogers
With marathon season rapidly approaching, I’m reminded of a conversation with my friend Fred a few years ago when we were wasting time with the usual twisted take on people in the news. Eventually, the topic came up about running in a marathon – as a recent 26-plus mile race had recently been completed, and won by another of those superb long distance runners from Kenya.
I Swear...
THIS happens
“This happens” is a saying among seasoned cruciverbalists. Who, being puzzlers, encourage that THIS be anagrammed.
In late 2003, I started writing crossword puzzles. Wanting to do it right, I treated 2004 as a year of study. I kept everything that seemed even remotely educational in a notebook.
Weekly Indulgence
As I walked into the warmly lit dining room of Mt. Vernon Restaurant earlier, I knew it would be an enjoyable experience. The Southern home-style cuisine restaurant set up against the backdrop of Lookout Mountain was sure to provide a relaxing lunch.
Realtor rises to challenges of the market, expands business
Realtor Susan Swicegood has a good sense of what makes a house a home.
“A home is a warm, secure place where you go at the end of the day to be yourself,” she says. “It’s where you can sit down on your couch with a glass of wine and your dryer running in the background and feel good about where you are. It’s where your cats and dogs and kids live; it’s where the heat and lights work; it’s where you feel safe.”
Community organizations set April 24 as Day of Service
The Mormon church, in cooperation with other faith-based organizations, community groups and civic leaders, has scheduled this year’s Day of Service for April 24, 2010. On that day, volunteers will carry out community service projects across the Southeastern part of the U.S., including Hamilton County. The Day of Service is an outgrowth of major volunteer projects the Mormon church did in conjunction with other organizations following Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav.

Make some lemonade
It’s probably no surprise that homeowners who have faced the ordeal of foreclosure feel a certain measure of shame or guilt about their experience. Whether or not those feelings are warranted, it's hard to survive the process completely unscathed.

Arkansas and its rice
Arkansas and its rice
Other than eating a big bowl of hot cooked rice with a rich, brown gravy poured over it, do you know much more about it? Like about how versatile rice is? In Tokyo, there are mats of woven rice straw called a tatami, and beer or sake brewed from rice. You can order a dish of rice seasoned with rice vinegar and topped with strips of beef, raised on a diet of rice bran. There are rice fuels that provide energy; rice oils for cooking, cleaning or keeping leather subtle, rice paper and clothing made from a synthetic fiber from a rice hull product called furfural. Flower gardens contain fertilized soil of rice hulls, and you may have started the day with warm cooked rice cereal or eaten a tasty Rice Krispy Marshmallow Treat for breakfast.
The Critic's Corner
Whenever people discuss great scary movies, they tend to bring up classics like “Dracula,” “Frankenstein” and “The Wolf Man.” Despite their cheesiness, those films excelled at establishing a creepy atmosphere and creating monsters that latched on to popular culture with blood stained claws. Think about it: Is there a more iconic blend of imagery and sound in a horror film than a werewolf howling at a full moon?
