Human sex trafficking occurs in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and former Soviet bloc countries. It is also rampant in Cambodia, Thailand, and Mumbai. But what about in the United States? What about in Tennessee?

Tennessee House Speaker Beth Harwell today sits at the pinnacle of legislative power, overseeing a House Republican majority of better than 2-1.

And she knows she has her work cut out for her.

During the 115th Annual Meeting of the Chattanooga Bar Association on Wednesday. January 23, Treasurer Paul Hatcher provided a financial report that consisted of the various operating and foundation account balances as of December 31, 2012. Hatcher explained afterward that these figures are net because the association has no bank debt.

Judge Frank G. Clement, Jr., of the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Middle Section, is not opposed to posting oral arguments on the Internet – with one exception: when the contents of the arguments might result in minor children being subjected to Internet bullying, harassment and abuse. In a January 14, 2013 letter to the Tennessee Bar and judiciary titled “Help protect children of domestic litigation from Internet abuse,” Judge Clement outlines his concern regarding the posting of oral arguments on the Internet, and urges the Tennessee Supreme Court to scrap the program before it begins this spring. Here is the letter, re-published in its entirety with Judge Clement’s permission:

In December, the star athlete was in New York for the festivities surrounding the presentation of a major sports award. The media were all over him, and he, thus, was on his best behavior – perhaps. He was, I take it, on that circuit that athletes apparently are put on by silent agents, wherein they get their pictures taken while bringing cheer to people with bleak futures – such as sportswriters.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chattanooga will host its 47th Tri-State Home Show February 22 through 24 at the Chattanooga Convention and Trade Center. The show will feature more than 470 booths that will showcase every conceivable product for the home. From kitchens, bathrooms and patios, to sunrooms, windows and doors, to an improved man cave, the show promises to be memorable.

I weep for action movies. Many have become cartoons with bits and pieces of human beings inserted into them. Then, when a great flick finally comes along that does things old school, with cameras and stunts instead of computer animated hijinks, no one goes to see it.

Volkswagen last week powered up the largest single solar installation at an automotive manufacturing facility in the United States and the biggest solar installation in the state of Tennessee. At a dedication ceremony here, dignitaries flipped a giant light switch to signal the official opening of the Volkswagen Chattanooga Solar Park, built on Volkswagen’s compound in Chattanooga.

George M. Clark has been appointed auditor for the state of Tennessee by Governor Ben Hooper. Mr. Clark is a Republican and one of Chattanooga’s outstanding citizens.

Mrs. Warnie Hooper Dayton, popular member of Chattanooga’s U.D.C., has been designated a place of honor in the Army of Tennessee as chaperone for sponsors and maids for the Confederate reunion to be held in Chattanooga. General Hickman made the appointment.
