Luther Masingill building legacy after more than 65 years

“Sixty seconds, Luther.”
From inside the main studio at WDEF, morning show host James Howard lets his partner in the adjacent booth know it’s almost time for him to go on the air. Luther Masingill swivels around in his chair and grabs his script. Consisting of just a few lines of copy tapped out on a Royal typewriter, it won’t take long to read.

Chattanooga Fire Training Center educates tomorrow’s heroes

Three days into the fire academy, Chief Mack Moore realized that firefighting was what he was meant to do and he hasn’t looked back since. Currently Moore is the training chief at the City of Chattanooga Fire Training Center.
“This is the only job that I’ve ever worked and I’ve been here 22 years and I’ve never woke up and said ‘ya know, I don’t want to go to work today,” Moore said.

Holiday gorging
If God had intended us to follow recipes, He wouldn’t have given us grandmothers.
— Linda Henley
The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found. — Calvin Trillin

I Swear...
Pageant time again!
By popular demand, I am again reminded of seasonal pageants past.
In particular, one written of by William Muehl. But also one featuring my own offspring.
And, of course, there also is the one directed by Rev. and Mrs. Wiggin in John Irving’s “A Prayer for Owen Meany.”

Weekly Indulgence
I love dairy, cheese especially. I rarely eat a meal without some type of cheese on it. But I also love trying new things, which is why I journeyed out of my comfort zone and enjoyed a vegan lunch at Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant last week.
I must admit before going any further, when I made the trip to Country Life, I thought it was a vegetarian restaurant with some vegan menu choices as well. I rarely eat meat and since it is Chattanooga’s only non-meat restaurant, I knew it had something wonderful to offer. I was not disappointed.

Food bank bridging the gap between provisions and the hungry

Here’s how a child’s empty dinner plate is filled in Chattanooga:
Pillsbury, Kraft, General Mills or another local or national corporation tells Feed America, the largest domestic hunger relief charity in the U.S., it has food it’s not going to sell. Once Feed America has the provisions, it allocates them throughout its network, of which the Chattanooga Area Food Bank is a part.

St. Nicholas uses innovative approach to educate students

Located on 24 scenic acres in East Brainerd, St. Nicholas has many things in common with other grade schools. It’s made up of buildings, hallways and classrooms, for starters. During school hours, teachers and students occupy those rooms, engaged in a timeless exchange. And because there’s a beginning and an end to each day, there are schedules to keep and assignments to complete.

Women’s Council of Realtors holds annual installation luncheon

The Chattanooga Women’s Council of Realtors held its annual installation luncheon last week. The event was held in the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel’s Roosevelt Room.
Joyce Smith, State Women’s Council treasurer called the meeting to order and introduced the head table. At the head table were: Liz Johnson; C’Na Raines, 2009 secretary; Kaye Ivey, 2009 vice president of membership; Cheree Dumas, 2009 president elect; Karen Flores, super sponsor; Tab Tollett, super sponsor and Linda Vaughn, state Women’s Council 2010 president.

Rheta Beck, Bonnie Rogers: A look at Chattanooga’s MLS system

Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last couple decades, changing most every profession in unforeseen ways. This holds true in the real estate profession, as the fairly recent transition from paper to electronics has revolutionized the industry.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Well, a new year is quickly approaching. They are beginning to fly by so quickly that it seems they are bumping into one another. You can hardly get into one year without reading about something that will be bigger and better come the next year, or the year after that. This certainly aids in keeping the world moving faster and faster. The older generation seems to be struggling with most of the technology, but the younger generation is keeping up quite nicely!

The Critic's Corner
You know a movie is going to play well in Tennessee if people don’t mind when it pokes fun at the Vols. And audience members at the screening of “The Blind Side” I attended laughed as Sandra Bullock’s character scrunched up her nose and expressed her disdain for the Volunteer State’s beloved college football team. That’s when I knew the film was going to be a hit.
