Edible landscaping, permaculture, sustainable living coexist
Nothing tastes as good as food fresh from the vine, and those who work and live at the Sequatchie Valley Institute know this to be true. Located on the Cumberland Plateau, this 400-acre former homestead is now a learning center and model for sustainable living with rows upon rows of edible landscaping ready for the picking.
District Court celebrates Constitution Day with students
Ninety-five American history and government students from Central, Hixson, Oolte-wah, and Red Bank High Schools spent Sept. 17, celebrating the 223rd birthday of the United States Consti-tution with the U.S. District Court in Chattanooga.
Chief United States District Judge Curtis L. Collier opened court with an introduction to the purpose and power of the Constitution. He stressed to the students the responsibility they have to be informed citizens. Our constitutional republic, he noted, depends upon an informed citizenry and cannot survive without one.

Mrs. Mary Wheland Willingham, widow of Arch C. Willingham II, died Saturday morning in a local hospital unexpectedly. She was a member of one of Chattanooga’s oldest and most prominent families. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Z.W. Wheland.

Sometimes people will do things to try to make you feel stupid. That happened to me this morning. It’s actually a periodic event. You see, every few years my firm replaces our computer hardware and software, and then “trains” all of us how to use it. Because the firm now has offices coast-to-coast, I guess some “advanced” form of communication is required.

Good time to build a fire ring
I just recently completed a stone fire ring on my place that has with it history that dates back to the days before the Civil War. I used stones cut with chisel by farm labor in 1842 to construct a fireplace in the house that once stood where my house now stands today.

My daughter Alexis came in the other night and after her mom served us up some great chicken cacciatorri, we decided to go to a movie. Alexis likes scary movies, as do I, but Kathy doesn’t so she stayed behind while we went to see “Let Me In.” (Spoiler alert – If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what happens, stop here and go read Vic instead)

The Shining Example Awards have been presented annually since 1985 by the STS, an organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Over half of these states can be seen from the top of Lover’s Leap at Rock City!
